Phi Theta Kappa


Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society of the University of Wisconsin-Barron County conducted its 41st induction ceremony on Thursday, March 27, at Lehman’s Supper Club. 

Students who accepted the university’s invitation to join PTK include Emma Babler of Barron, Adrian Balts of Dallas, Theresa Erbs of Chippewa Falls, Adam Frankiewicz of Spooner, Kayla Fuller of Rice Lake, Dustin Hetke of New Auburn, Greg Hilgart of Cameron, Jordan Kizewski of Dallas, Harun Kofiro of Barron, Aidan McLaughlin of Rice Lake, David Melsness of Chetek, Kayla Ostenson of Barron, Lance Peterson of Spooner, Erik Severson of Birchwood, Tiffany Strohschein of Cumberland, Gary Venema of Rice Lake, and April Witkus of Spooner.

Keynote speakers at the induction ceremony were UW-Barron Professor of Engineering Christa James-Byrnes, and Communication Arts and French Professor Mary Hoeft.  PTK President Rebekah Schumacher of Chetek, Secretary Glenn Wilson of Birchwood, and Historian Joe Bockover of Webster conducted the induction ceremony. 

Each inductee was presented a white rose, symbolic of the intellectual friendship that is formed in Phi Theta Kappa. 

During the 2007-2008 academic year, Phi Theta Kappa conducted a university-wide Read-A-Thon to gather money for the Barron Literacy Council and a daffodil sale for the American Cancer Society.  They conducted a campus-wide voter registration program and hosted a causus preceding Wisconsin’s Presidential Primary.  They also hosted a debate between the candidates running for Barron County Circuit Court Branch 3.

Advisors to PTK include Dean Paul Chase and Professors James-Byrnes and Hoeft.

All students earning 12 credits and a minimum grade point of 3.25 are invited to join Phi Theta Kappa.
