New Directions

Area adults interested in beginning or continuing their education to earn a University of Wisconsin degree are invited to attend New Directions in Adult Learning at the University of Wisconsin-Barron County in Rice Lake on Tuesday, April 1 st (no foolin’) at 6:30 p.m. in the Blue Hills Lecture Hall in Ritzinger Hall.

There are many options available to those who want to earn a Bachelor’s Degree. The evening will begin with a presentation on using the UW-BC Associate of Arts and Science degree as a starting point. The program will continue with breakout groups on several pathways: Independent Learning through the University of Wisconsin Extension; UW-Colleges Online, the UWIN program, and UW baccalaureate degree programs that enable people to earn a four-year degree without having to commute, move, or leave their jobs.

Through partnerships with UW-Milwaukee (Organization Administration, Information Resource Management, Communications); UW-Platteville (Business Administration); UW-Superior (Elementary Education, Communications); UW-Green Bay (Interdisciplinary Studies) students can complete major course work and upper level courses at a four-year UW campus via distance education (online, weekend, and/or print-based courses) to earn a Bachelor’s degree. Representatives from those four-year UW campuses will be available for individual appointments the following day in the UW-BC Commons area.

At New Directions, participants will also have the opportunity to visit with current UW-BC adult students in small groups who will share their experiences about adjusting to college: common concerns and challenges facing the returning adult student, the application process, and financial aid (including the UW-BC Return-To-Learn Scholarship program in which the recipient can receive up to $500 for each of two semesters).

Jim Dzimiela, Educational Opportunity Counselor, and Paulette Ponick, Adult Student Advisor, will be available for individual advising using the Myers Briggs Type Inventory and Learning and Study Skills Inventory (LASSI) which help to determine career paths both in college and the workplace.

To better assist the returning adult student, UW-BC offers academic support services in math, writing, and study skills in The Learning Center; career counseling; financial assistance; textbook rental; online courses; a child care assistance program; and the lowest tuition in the UW System. Bring a friend and explore all the available options.
