Library Periodical Articles

Finding articles in Print

How do I search for an article in print journals that I find in the library?

For a list of our print journals click here.

From the Online Searches page click on Electronic Access to Articles and Online Search Tools

From the Quick Links at the top of the page

Pick a general database such as WilsonWeb EbscoHost or ProQuest - which ever you like best.  In the examples below I am using EBSCOhost.

For EBSCOhost go to the Database Chooser page and select the Collection of Journals that seems to cover your subject area.

For my example I am using Academic Search Elite

Academic Search Elite

Academic Search Elite offers full text for more than 2,000 scholarly journals, including more than 1,500 peer-reviewed titles. This multi-disciplinary database covers virtually every area of academic study. More than 100 journals have PDF images back to 1985. This database is updated on a daily basis via EBSCOhost.

Click on the   Title ListTitle List  title list for that database

This brings up an alphabetical list of journal titles.  I want articles in National Geographic so I will click on N

When I scroll down the title list I find

National Geographic

Bibliographic Records: 01/01/1985 to present; Full Text: 01/01/1995 to present (with a 3 Month delay)

*Full text delay due to publisher restrictions ("embargo")

Click on the Linked title National Geographic

Now look for the tab labeled Search within this publication

Click on that tab

In the Search Box

Type the word and into the search box after the journal name then type in your search term.

Here you can limit your results to a certain date but if all you need is recent articles you can get that by sorting your results by date after you get them.  You do not want to limit your results by full text if you want to turn to our print journals – they are all full text.  This full text refers to online resources and right now you are just using the index feature.

Limit your results:

If you leave off the “and” it will not work.  If you have trouble click on  Search Tips and that will take you to a page that explains how to do it.

Click on search and your results will come up and notice that you can sort them by date, source, author and relevance (sometimes called rank).
